July 21, 1933 (Friday) Missoula - Federal Prohibition Officer Paul A. Read was
shot and killed by a man he had arrested for violation of the Volstead Act. Read had arrested
the man between the old Oxford Cafe
at Higgins and Broadway and the Palace Hotel, and was taking him to jail. The shooting occurred almost midway between the jail and the
Sheriff’s office on Woody street at about 9:00 PM. Read was struck by two of five
bullets fired by his prisoner.
Sheriff Thompson arrested the suspect immediately after the shooting.
Agent Read left a wife and three children, Barbra Jean 3 yrs,
Kathrine 8 yrs and Harry 14 months.
