Louiseville City Watchman Richard Moore

October 3, 1870 Louiseville City (Cedar Creek) - City Night Watchman Richard Moore, formerly Constable of Cedar Township (Louiseville), was investigating suspicious noises coming from near the Wells Fargo Express Office.  An intoxicated man was shouting and creating a disturbance at about one o'clock in the morning.

As Watchman Moore approached, the man fired a shotgun, striking Moore in the chest.  Another man who was with Moore at the time, was also shot, but his wounds were not fatal.  Local citizens took the suspect into custody and turned him over to sheriff’s deputies.  While in custody, he managed to get hold of a deputy's revolver and committed suicide.

Before Richard Moore died, he asked friends to take him out of Louiseville to be buried.  On the day of his funeral Louiseville's businesses closed in his memory.  A wagon bearing Moore's casket, accompanied by his many friends afoot and on horseback, made the trip from Louiseville to Frenchtown, Montana where the faithful employee of the people of Louiseville was laid to rest.
