Undersheriff James Thompson July 1, 1878 Missoula County Undersheriff James Thompson died on the Flathead Indian Reservation where he had traveled on horseback to serve papers on an individual.  When Thompson arrived at the reservation, he was suffering a severe case of sun stroke resulting from the strenuous ride in the summer heat.   Undersheriff Thompson was unable to recover and died several days later.
